Just last week as the Super Pals were chatting, the subject of sunscreen and daily sun protection came up. Their favorite brand, purchased in Europe, is Anthelios, which contains one of the most complete mixes of sun blocking ingredients. Girlawhirl, who's soon headed to Europe for her long awaited vacation, was asked to return with several tubes, each Pal having a specific degree of protection and formulation they preferred. It was enough to make Girlawhirl's head spin… There's definitely something special in the Anthelios sunscreens. Like other brands, they use ingredients that protect against UVB and longer UVA rays. But a special ingredient, Mexoryl™ SX is particularly effective against shortwave UVA rays. It also remains stable when exposed to sunlight, so it won't break down after a few hours in the sun.
Girlawhirl and the Super Pals are certainly not the only American women who admit to having carried tubes of Anthelios home from Europe. Until last week, Mexoryl SX wasn't approved by the FDA as a sun protection ingredient. This long awaited approval will allow L'Oréal, which owns the patented formula, to market it in the US.
By the fall, a daily moisturizing cream with SPF 15 called Anthelios SX and sold by the L'Oréal brand La Roche-Posay should be available in the US. With more products containing Mexoryl SX to follow, Girlawhirl and the Super Pals can count on complete protection from UVA rays. Which is great, because while UVB is what makes them burn, it's the UVA that causes most of the skin's aging, DNA damage and ultimately, skin cancer.
