the busójárás festival in hungary chases winter away
Feb 11, 2008

Girlawhirl already has a list of “must visit” Mardi Gras style parties around the world. But thanks to a Super Pal's tip, she's just added one more. And while it might not be as glamorous or well known as Carnevale in Venice or have the sambaing throngs of Brazil's Carnaval, Girlawhirl's quite sure the Busós in Hungary are just as much fun…

Part Mardi Gras and part Ground Hog Day -  at least from what Girlawhirl can deduce -the quiet village of Moh's on the banks of the Danube River near the Croatian border, about a three hour journey from Budapest, comes alive in the days before Lent to get the partying done at the Busójárás Festival. But more than just having a good time before the reflective Lenten season begins - the basis of most carnival celebrations - the Hungarian villagers also aim to “scare winter away.”

Locals dress as Busós devil-like beings, in sheepskin costumes with frightening masks to scare off winter. People travel from all over the country to watch the Busójárás festival, enjoy the bonfire, sip warm wine and take in the native Hungarian dancing.
