Like the TV show of years past, today's Melrose Place is one part hip, one part sexy and another part desire. The ivy covered triangle is anchored by the three Marc Jacobs boutiques… clothing, accessories, and the last for home, which is his only home shop in the U.S., filled with blankets, chunky unleaded crystal and other wildly colorful decorative options.
Also on the block is the west coast outpost of the ancient Florentine Farmacia Santa Maria Novella. Its products are still made with the same ingredients and recipes used since 1612 when the Dominican friars of Santa Maria Novella began selling the herbal remedies, soaps, lotions and tonics that they had been making for themselves for 400 years. Girlawhirl is particularly fond of the gardenia scented soap. She keeps bars of it in her dresser drawers. The shop on Melrose place, a cool, calm, fragrant oasis carries all of the SMN products as well as a more modern home fragrance line by Tuscan perfumier Lorenzo Villoresi, and some additional European fragrances, soaps and home accessories. Across the street, on Melrose Avenue, on the other side of Orlando, Sweet Lady Jane is the place to stop for a treat. The lemon bars are spectacular. Heading west on Melrose Avenue, Girlawhirl keeps checking for Diane von Furstenberg's new shop which is scheduled to open soon. Continuing towards Robertson on Melrose, there are a few great spots Girlawhirl always checks out. First, Elixir for a quick herbal-does-a-body-good-drink, or if time permits a mini numerology or tarot reading. Then, in a grassy courtyard across from Urth Café, there are a few great shops…Cake Jewelry, for affordable baubles with a funky edge, and the un après-midi de chien store for chic, durable and colorful French handbags. A little further along is Soolip, a shop filled with beautiful paper goods, stationery, greeting cards, wrapping paper, journals and more. And on Sunday Mornings, the triangle where Melrose Place meets Melrose Avenue is full of farmers stands. Girlawhirl loves this, an easy way to get some fresh stuff for dinner. And a great way to end the weekend and prepare for the hectic week ahead. Go Do It!
