ogunquit maine is the perfect mix of history and seaside fun
Nov 5, 2007

Whatever the season Girlawhirl never turns down an invitation to visit Ogunquit, Maine. From its beginnings as an Indian settlement through its years as an artist's haven and summertime getaway, she discovers something new – and noteworthy – with every trip…

Today, most of the action centers around Perkins Cove, a manmade inlet that leads to the Atlantic Ocean and provides a haven for all kinds of boats including the working lobster boats that fish along the coast. There's a bridge that spans the cove, designed for people and bikes, not for cars. What makes the bridge unique is that when some of the taller boats need to have it raised so that they can move from Perkins Cove to the Atlantic, they're at the mercy of those on shore – the controls are on dry land and open to the public so anyone passing by can operate the bridge.

The cove is full of incredible shops, restaurants and galleries. And to minimize car traffic, a series of wooden trolleys, with fun names like Molly, Dolly and Polly circulate around the town picking up tourists and natives alike.

One of Girlawhirl's favorite ways to walk off her lunch is on the one-mile long path called Marginal Way. It runs from the cove to the three mile long sandy beach and rises 100 feet above the ocean with benches along the way to enjoy the view. The trail was first cut and used by the Indians at a cattle path and now it's a narrow paved pathway that winds through the cliffs. Girlawhirl's always careful to keep an eye on her footing, but at the same time she's also distracted by the homes that hug the top of the cliff above the Marginal Way.

With one of the oldest summer stock theaters in the country, a quintessential New England town center that includes a fieldstone library known for its original art donated by the artists who summered in town, and a world renowned museum of art, whatever the season – or weather – Girlawhirl always finds something to do in Ogunquit, Maine.
