Away from the vertical glitz of Michigan Avenue, Girlawhirl always makes time for a visit to Chicago's Bucktown neighborhood. There she finds a mix of clothing, home furnishing and other kinds of boutiques, restaurants and clubs that are no less glamorous, and a bit more individualistic, than what she typically finds on the Magnificent Mile… As soon as she hits the intersection of Damen, Milwaukee and North Avenues, she vacillates for a moment, because there are must-see-shops pulling her in opposite directions. South on Milwaukee is Jade, where she can find her favorites from Missoni along with accessories to complete any outfit. And just a few doors away is John Fluevog, famous for stylish – some might even say conversation inspiring – shoes that have the bones of a sneaker and deliver all day comfort.
After a day in Bucktown, she usually leaves fully loaded with bags and goodies galore.

But north on Damen are a slew of favorites like Tangerine for Orla Kiely and Tibi, P45 for emerging designers, and the cool clean lines of Chaiken and Chloe at Helen Yi. Gem is where she goes for baubles, Stitch for home goods and oddly enough handbags, and Psycho Baby for the kiddies. For fun she can design a T-shirt at the T Shirt Deli, and have her fill of all kinds of wonderful desserts at Hot Chocolate.
