The shops of East Hampton, New York make Girlawhirl?s weekend complete
Apr 23, 2007

With summer approaching, Girlawhirl?s thoughts turn to long weekend getaways, beachside barbeques and plenty of summertime shopping. New Yorkers head out of the city during summer weekends, and while there are plenty of options, like the country (translation: upstate) and the shore (translation the New Jersey coastline), the most famous and fabulous weekend destination is The Hamptons?

The eastern tip of Long Island is full of craggy coastline, a mix of mansions and real country houses, a few vineyards, fewer roads (translation: traffic that can be unbearable at times) and four towns that end in Hampton. From Westhampton through to East Hampton and even a little further down the road to Montauk, those towns along with South Hampton, Amagansett, Sag Harbor, and Water Mill are the places to see and be seen from June to September. There?s a shopping thoroughfare in every town, but Girlawhirl prefers the laid back luxury of East Hampton to the hustle and bustle of South Hampton.

Girlawhirl always chuckles when she hits East Hampton?s Main Street because it?s definitely a ?we?re not in Kansas anymore,? kind of moment. Of course she drools over the super soft sweaters at Christopher Fischer, Magaschoni and Cashmere Hampton, which are practically all next door to each other, creating a cashmere trifecta of sorts, but she comes back down to earth as she does some scouting for work outfits at Theory and Elie Tahari.

But when she?s in the middle of a beachy weekend, she?d much rather check out the casual clothes at Roberta Freymann, J.Crew, or even the pretty printed cotton collection at A Little of What You Fancy. She can spruce up her apartment with looks and trinkets from Calypso Home, Jonathan Adler and Rumrunner Home. And of course, when she needs a break, she can stop into the Golden Pear, a Hamptons institution.
