The St. Stephen's Cathedral stop is the best spot to start a tour of Vienna
Sep 24, 2007

In warmer weather she prefers a seaside vacation, but once the temps start to cool off, the jet-setting starts to heat up again for Girlawhirl. So when a Super Pal said she was looking for a companion on her upcoming Austrian vacation, Girlawhirl jumped at the chance to sneak in an early Fall European trip…

The beauty of a visit to Austria's capitol city, Vienna, is that Girlawhirl can literally cover a majority of the city's highlights in only one train stop: St. Stephen's Cathedral. From that one stop Girlawhirl is within mere steps of the breathtaking Gothic cathedral, and only a short stroll away from the Imperial Palace and grounds and the Vienna State Opera house, or Staatsoper; not to mention the many other ornate opera houses all within walking distance.

Since Girlawhirl's not too afraid of heights, she agreed to take the elevator to the top of the cathedral's tower to get a close-up look at the incredible tiling of St. Stephen's roof, and a truly breathtaking panoramic bird's eye view of the city – she was entranced, as long as she didn't look down.

Back on solid ground a choice had to be made. One incredible store-lined promenade called Kärntner Straße, led to the Staatsoper – a must see on her opera loving pal's list. But steps away in the other direction was the Hofburg Imperial Palace, which was full of rooms to be explored.

With an hour to kill before the next Staatsoper tour, the first option seemed perfect: the pair chose to take the long way towards the music, stopping in H&M, Mango, Miss Sixty, Humanic, Benetton and Jenny, just to name a few. They looked for shoes at Salamander, popped into Wolford and checked out the beauty finds at Douglas. But with so many spots to shop, one could spend days wandering in and out of the historic buildings and alleyways filled with every kind of store imaginable.

Girlawhirl and her Super Pal had come at the right season – and day – for shopping. They had been warned to plan carefully because most stores are closed on Sundays and national holidays – which Austria seems to celebrate quite a few of. But it was their lucky day, and the shopping was fabulous!
