Girlawhirl helps the Ocean Conservancy save the seas

Girlawhirl was amazed to find out that one of her Super Pals is deathly afraid of sharks. Girlawhirl thought this was a little funny, not because she wouldn't also be afraid if she encountered a shark in the ocean, but her Pal had never even lived near the water, so sharks had never really been a threat to her. And as fear can turn into obsession, Girlawhirl's Pal continued to spew fact after fact about how shark attacks have risen in the past few years…

Apparently, man-made structures in the water, like canals, islands and artificial reefs attract marine life. And that's what draws the sharks
closer to shorelines. This got Girlawhirl thinking: in addition to man-made islands and structures in the oceans, with all the talk of global warming and environmental disasters like oil spills, the entire aquatic ecosystem is experiencing changes. No wonder sharks are swimming for the shores!

But her shark obsessed Super Pal also told her about the Ocean Conservancy, an organization that works to maintain the natural habitat of ocean wildlife. Her friend supports the group because she believes that its work will help keep the sharks out at sea, but Girlawhirl loved the idea of adopting a coral reef, or even participating in costal cleanup programs.

The Ocean Conservancy's next International Costal Cleanup is scheduled for September 16. Girlawhirl signed up at oceanconservancy.org
