On a Wing and a Prayer
Mar 1, 2006

On a recent flight, Girlawhirl was just about to take her standard mid-flight snooze when a tiny voice across the aisle caught her attention. A child was telling the flight attendant about how he was on his way to get treatment at a hospital far away from his home. But it wasn't the distance that caught her attention; it was how he was getting there…

Girlawhirl had heard of charitable flights for people in need, but she had never really thought about it before. And here in front of her was a brave little boy, happily telling the flight attendant how someone he had never met was making sure he got the best care possible.

Hearing his story, Girlawhirl knew she had to find out more. For someone who travels as much as she does, this seemed like an almost too natural fit for her. While other organizations out there provide similar services—through private flights and donated tickets or airline awards—Girlawhirl knew when she saw the Miracle Flights for Kids® web site that this was the one for her. The charity is the only one of its kind that accepts monetary donations it can then use to purchase flights for seriously ill children.

Miracle Flights for Kids makes sure that money and distance do not dictate whether or not a child can get better (most insurance companies won't cover travel costs). The charity also has a Project Hero network, made up of private pilots and plane owners committed to getting sick children to the medical care they need.

While Girlawhirl doesn't own her own plane, she does try to set aside some money each month to help others. And the next time she sees a sick child crossing the country to get the help they need on one of her flights; she can at least think to herself that they are traveling with her.
