Girlawhirl hates to say it—since she subscribes to the attitude that if you say something, you believe it, and she would never want to believe this—but sometimes, she just has to admit that it is definitely a man's world out there. Not that she has ever felt less than equal in her workplace or experienced more than a few slightly annoying remarks that could be construed as sexist, but as she travels the globe, Girlawhirl sees first hand that the world in which she lives and works is not the same world for women everywhere... That's why she tries to support the Global Fund for Women, a nonprofit organization that strives to strengthen women's rights groups all over the world. Part of a worldwide women's movement, the Global Fund for Women provides flexible, general support grants to organizations that tackle a host of universal issues affecting women today, such as reproductive health, economic independence, educational development and political participation. Since 1987, the Global Fund for Women has granted over $42 million to more than 2,500 women's groups in 162 countries.
Girlawhirl loves donating here because she feels she can really make a difference with even what some would consider a small amount of money. Thirty-five dollars will help the Nepal Disabled and Neglected Women Society educate and train women with disabilities so they can find jobs in their communities. Fifty dollars can provide school supplies for 100 girls in the Congo through the Union for the Emancipation of Indigenous Women.
In addition to monetary donations, the Global Fund for Women also accepts donations in the form of time. Volunteers and interns are always needed. An Event Organizing Kit is also available for anyone interested in raising money for the Fund by hosting an event—anything from a bake sale to a cocktail hour to, perhaps for Girlawhirl and her Super Pals, a clothing swap.
