At the beginning of the summer, Girlawhirl asked her Super Pals to work together with charity: water to build a well in a community where there was no access to fresh clean water. And while times are tough here in the U.S. right now, lots of readers contributed. But the most wallet friendly way to add $1 to build the well requires nothing more than signing up for the girlawhirl.com morning email... That's right. It's a way to make a donation without sending or spending any money! For each new person that becomes a registered user at girlawhirl.com, an extra $1 will be donated by the website to charity: water to be put towards the Girlawhirl well.
Girlawhirl thinks about what it must be like not to have fresh water almost every time she turns on the tap, takes a shower, or flushes. charity: water works all over the world, partnering with locals to dig wells where there currently are none. Women and children no longer have to trek for miles to the nearest river and the water from the wells is clean and drinkable. Just $20 can provide 20 years of fresh water for one person, and a well, which can truly change the lives of a whole community, costs about $5000 to dig.
So as Girlawhirl spends the last few summer weekends swimming, quenching her thirst with a glass of ice water and even running through a sprinkler or two with the kiddies, she'll be thinking about a community in a far flung land, just waiting for its well to be built.
