Girlawhirl picks up some tips on how to work a room Aug 9, 2006

Girlawhirl's been looking forward to attending an upcoming industry event since the day she found out about her promotion. She's been hearing about it for years, but never attended—her boss always did. This trade show of sorts would introduce the fashion flock to new fabrics, colors and ideas that would be incorporated into next year's clothes… And she now would finally be able to attend! To see it all, and more importantly, meet with her customers to find out what trends and colors they would be pursuing and what she could do to help them. Of course there would be wining and dining, parties and lots of opportunities to meet new people in the industry who could turn into clients. Each time her previous boss had returned from this show there was always a flurry of follow up, pitches and pandemonium as the process of wooing and landing new accounts unfolded.
While thrilled with the prospect of attending, truth be told, Girlawhirl was terrified by the last part, the need—expectation, really—to make contacts that could turn into business for her company. She would have to ‘work it' harder and smarter than ever before.
For a game plan, she turned to CareerBuilder.com, and Don Straits' article, ‘Master the Art of Working A Room.' Straits, CEO of Corporate Warriors and an expert on job searching in today's high-tech environment, outlined steps and gave Girlawhirl concrete examples and advice she could use to fight her demons and get on with her job.
Now she just has to figure out what to wear.
