To be sure there was plenty of joy and fierce pride to be seen in the Enelerai community before it got a new school building and a new well. But what Girlawhirl wanted most was to see the faces of the girls, who had previously trekked 5 to 10 kilometers (and back!) to that old watering hole, after they were able to access clean, clear water from their new well. The show was just the kick that Girlawhirl needed to get herself and her Super Pals involved in their own fresh water project.
The cost of digging a well in a developing country is about 5,000 US dollars. That's a lot of money to Girlawhirl and her friends, but to the 1.1 billion people who live without access to clean water, it may as well be a million dollars. charity: water works along with local partners to dig wells, providing clean water to communities in some of the poorest parts of the world, and Girlawhirl wants to help.
Can girlawhirl.com readers finance a well? A donation of just $20 can provide one person clean water for 20 years, but every penny makes a difference. By combining girlawhirl.com reader donations, Girlawhirl believes they can build a well – so much so that she's putting some extra money where her heart is. Here's how the charity: water challenge works:
