Girlawhirl finds her way through some Sticky Work Situations
Apr 11, 2007

A little self-reflection is always a good thing. So at quarterly review time Girlawhirl took a moment to think about her role as a boss. Does she treat her employees with respect and kindness? Is she understanding over their small slip-ups, and firm about the not-so-minor infractions? Overall, she felt good about the job she was doing – which was later confirmed by her own review. But it made her think back to the annoying, unpleasant and uncomfortable situations some of her former employers have stuck her in…

Girlawhirl distinctly remembers one such incident when her boss actually asked her to change the date on a document to cover his mistake. Fresh out of college, and new to the corporate world, Girlawhirl remembers exactly how she felt about it at the time: that she ultimately should follow direction because after all, he was her boss, but rotten because deep down she knew it wasn't honest. Luckily, it never got that far because his mistake was exposed by someone else. Then and there Girlawhirl swore she would speak up if she ever found herself in that situation again.

Apparently, she's not alone. According to CareerBuilder.com's Eight Sticky Work Situations and How to Handle Them, there are several kinds of questionable circumstances employees may find themselves in, and distinct and appropriate ways to handle each.

Whether it's as simple as a boss making someone feel more like a personal assistant than a company employee, as upsetting as being frequently yelled at in front of coworkers, or as complicated as unwanted romantic advances, CareerBuilder offers ideas on how to handle each specific situation.
